The sooner you start planning, the easier it will be. There
are many things to consider when choosing what college you want to go to.
What is the reputation of the school? Do they have a program for what you're
interested in? Do you like the campus or area? Seek out information from
both the school AND independent sources. It's important to have a balanced
view. You can gather even more information from a campus tour.
When you've narrowed down your options, it's a good idea to make a sketch of
the expected costs of each school. You can get information about tuition, books,
room and board directly from the school. Other expenses you can estimate on your
own. Include things you might need like a computer, a microwave, etc. BE
REALISTIC! It's better to overestimate expenses and give yourself a margin of
comfort.
As early as possible, you and your parents need to sit down and review the
information you've gathered. Have a frank discussion about the family's
financial situation. Discuss what your parents can contribute and what you can
contribute. Compare these numbers to your estimated costs. The difference
between the two must be made up with a combination of scholarships and loans. If
you plan well in advance you can avoid many problems and disappointments. Don't
set yourself up for disappointment by falling in love with a school before
considering whether you'll be able to afford it.
Know the application deadlines well in advance. In addition to college
application deadlines, there are application deadlines for the FAFSA and for
private grants and scholarships.
