FAFSA

Submitting a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first thing any prospective college student should do. This form asks for information about your finances, as well as your parents', to evaluate the financial need of the student. It quantifies how much your parents are expected to contribute financially to your college education. All students should do this, no matter what their financial situation. The Federal Government awards grants to help students and parents pay for expensive college tuition and related expenses. The FAFSA will allow you to apply for government grants and loans, but it is also required for many private scholarships. In addition, it gives you an indication of your financial situation so you can start planning.

Don't put off doing this until you finish your taxes. The application is designed so that you can estimate your financial figures and correct them later. Timely submission ensures that you will be eligible for all awards.
